Bridge Project
I began photographing the Broad Street Bridge in Albany, GA shortly before it was condemned. Crossing the Flint River, It was a beautiful bridge dedicated to the veterans of WWI. I continue to document the process of its destruction.
The bridge was built in 1920, part of a massive federal funding project including 1000 miles of highway under the direction of W.R. Neel, state highway engineer, and Searcy B. Slack, bridge engineer, with the State Highway Department of Georgia in coordination with the Prayton, Howton, and Wood Construction Company of Albany, GA.
The original bridge over the flint was a covered toll bridge built by Horace King, a former slave and bridge builder who built bridges in Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi. The footprint of King's bridge is marked on the banks of the Flint near the Memorial Bridge, currently being demolished. The bridge house still stands as the Albany Welcome Center.
